Consequences, inspired by "Forgiveless" by SZA

SZA’s “Forgiveless” has this raw, unapologetic energy that really inspired me while creating this piece. It’s not about neat resolutions or perfect outcomes—it’s about facing the truth, no matter how messy or uncomfortable it feels. I wanted to channel that same energy in my reimagining of Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Instead of a boat, I placed a school bus riding the wave, representing the weight of learning and societal progress. Mount Fuji is replaced by towering industrial buildings emitting smoke, a stark reminder of the environmental toll of modernization.
The line, “I don’t care ’bout consequences,” lingered in my mind as I painted. It reflects this defiance, the willingness to push forward regardless of what lies ahead. That same defiance exists in the wave itself—relentless and unstoppable. At the same time, the school bus feels small and almost fragile, trying to navigate through forces much larger than itself. It made me think about how we, as individuals and as a society, often charge ahead without fully reckoning with the long-term impact of our actions.
Painting the industrial buildings was a sobering process. Their muted tones and the black pen outlines felt heavy, symbolizing the burden we’ve placed on the environment. The smoky skyline contrasts sharply with the vibrant wave, almost like a battle between resilience and destruction. It reminded me of the line, “You can’t even sit in peace,” which feels so relevant to the constant tension we live in—between wanting to move forward and grappling with the damage left behind.
