The idea for my artwork came to life after listening to MF DOOM’s “Rapp Snitch Knishes,” a song that’s both witty and biting in its critique of people who overshare, especially when it comes to dangerous or personal information. The lyrics—“Rapp snitches, telling all their business / Sit in the court and be their own star witness”—stuck with me, painting a vivid picture of people who expose themselves, even to their own detriment. That line sparked the idea for the character in my piece: a girl looking composed on the outside, yet the reflection reveals a man with a shiesty grinning with golden teeth, a representation of that hidden, self-destructive side DOOM raps about.
The lyrics brought to mind the way people often get caught up in self-exposure to impress or to fit in, a theme I felt strongly connected to. I chose watercolor and pen to give a soft, almost innocent look to the girl’s face, contrasting with the harsh lines and darker tones used in the reflection, to represent the darker consequences of revealing too much. The background, painted in green, reflects both ambition and envy—qualities that can motivate us but also lead us to misrepresent ourselves for validation.
DOOM’s lyrics influenced the subtleties I wanted to convey: the girl’s composed look represents the persona we carefully curate for the world, while the man in her reflection—his smile sly and his golden tooth catching the light—embodies the reckless desire for attention that DOOM calls out in his lyrics. Through this visual contrast, I wanted to show the fine line between authenticity and overexposure, and the risks of revealing parts of ourselves for fleeting approval. In a way, my painting became a personal reminder of the dangers of oversharing, a caution echoed in DOOM’s clever but brutally honest lyrics.
