SZA’s “Good Days” captures the swirling complexity of emotions and the desire for clarity amidst chaos, and my artwork reflects that very sentiment. The painting, with its flowing blue watercolor, presents a girl at a crossroads—her gaze lost in thought, embodying both hope and uncertainty. This duality of feeling resonates deeply within me, echoing the lines, “Good day living in my mind” and “I’ve been on my empty mind shit.”
The girl’s half-finished face symbolizes the ongoing process of self-discovery and the struggle to free oneself from the burdens of the past. It’s a visual representation of that urgent need for a break from the chaos of life, as expressed in the lyrics: “Gotta let go of weight, can’t keep what’s holding me.” The unfinished quality of the painting serves as a reminder that we are all works in progress, navigating through moments of doubt and the weight of our experiences.
I’m drawn to the lines, “Tell me I'm not my fears, my limitations,” which speak to that internal battle we all face. The girl in my painting is grappling with her own insecurities, longing to break free from the weight of expectations and past mistakes. As I painted her, I thought about my own moments of self-doubt and the constant struggle to keep moving forward despite the fears that linger in my mind.
The blue hues swirling around her create an ethereal backdrop, symbolizing the vastness of possibilities that lie ahead. Just as SZA sings, “Still wanna try, still believe in good days,” my artwork embodies that hopeful yearning for brighter moments. It’s about acknowledging the challenges while keeping faith in the beauty that can emerge from the struggle.
As I reflect on my journey, I remember a time when I felt overwhelmed by life’s uncertainties, similar to how the lyrics describe the weight of “loose change.” In those moments, I often turned to art as a means of expression and escape, channeling my emotions onto the canvas. The girl’s contemplative expression captures that essence—how art can be a refuge, a space where we can explore our feelings and find clarity.
This painting encapsulates the idea that while we may feel lost at times, the promise of good days lies in our willingness to confront our fears and embrace the unknown. The unfinished nature of the artwork serves as a celebration of the journey itself, reminding us that life is not about achieving perfection but rather about navigating the messiness of existence with resilience and grace. In every brushstroke, I hope to convey that even amidst the chaos, there’s beauty in the process of becoming—an eternal dance of highs and lows, uncertainty and hope.
